MANCHESTER, NH — The Manchester Association of Police Supervisors (MAPS) acknowledges tonight's decision to table the proposed budget and continue discussions regarding the City's fiscal priorities and long-term public safety needs.
MAPS recognizes that developing a city budget requires balancing many important priorities while addressing the needs of residents, businesses, and municipal services.
The Manchester Police Department continues to face recruitment and retention challenges that have been discussed by police leadership, city officials, and public safety stakeholders. As New Hampshire's busiest police department, Manchester officers and supervisors respond to nearly 100,000 calls for service annually while managing a wide range of public safety responsibilities.
MAPS has consistently emphasized the importance of maintaining a police department that can attract qualified candidates, retain experienced personnel, and provide effective leadership throughout the organization. These issues remain important considerations as budget discussions continue.
Experienced supervisors play a critical role in public safety operations. They oversee emergency responses, mentor officers, ensure accountability, manage investigations, and help maintain the professional standards expected by Manchester residents.
The association appreciates the opportunity for additional discussion and review of the issues affecting public safety staffing and looks forward to continued conversations with city leadership and the administration.
"Our members are proud to serve the residents of Manchester, and our focus remains on ensuring the department can recruit and retain the experienced supervisors and officers needed to meet the demands of New Hampshire's largest city," said Rob Megowen, President of MAPS. “As budget discussions continue, we believe it is important that decision-makers fully consider the long-term public safety implications of staffing competitiveness, workforce stability, and the department's ability to attract and retain qualified personnel. These issues are critical to maintaining the level of service that Manchester residents expect and deserve."
MAPS remains committed to supporting a strong, sustainable police department that can continue meeting the needs of Manchester residents today and in the future.
